"Leslie Howard Hamlet" (1937) by Eugene Camille Fitsch (15" x 11.5")

The play is Hamlet which opened at the Imperial Theatre on 45th St. on Nov. 10, 1936. Leslie Howard (1893-1943) raised the curtain on this Hamlet only weeks after John Gielgud’s Hamlet had played a very successful run. Howard’s version only lasted for 36 performances. In this image it appears that Fitsch was off stage right looking through side curtains onto the stage. Other scenery is seen in the left of the image and actors appear to be waiting to go on. The setting, designed by Stewart Chaney, was a Viking castle.
